Metz Press is an independent publisher of high quality information books and illustrated non-fiction for the local market as well as the international co-edition market. We have sold rights to our books in countries all over the world, having impressed reputable international companies with our quality of content and production and our ability to deliver.
We draw much inspiration from our craft authors. Their creativity and practical, hands-on approach and our clever photographers in this genre contribute to a range that helped establish Metz Press as the leading craft publisher in South Africa. Gardening is no less a creative activity and we are proud of the beautiful, informative books we are able to do with accomplished, dedicated authors.
Our parenting books are conceptualized and written by experts in their field, and in this category, too, we have been fortunate to attract top professionals who have helped us establish a sought-after and highly regarded parenting list. Like our craft and gardening authors, they are passionate about what they do, and use several platforms to share their knowledge and experience with parents.
The fourth pillar of our list, general interest (which includes cookery and several self-help titles), has seen good growth recently, and gives us the opportunity to consider amazing books that may not be a perfect fit with any of the other categories.
Metz Press is a family business ably assisted by professionals to whom major functions have been contracted out.
Known as a slave driver who seems to care more about deadlines than people, publisher Wilsia Metz nevertheless manages to attract the cream of South Africa’s crop of non-fiction authors to Metz Press where she ensures that their skills, knowledge and creativity are showcased in internationally acclaimed books. More likely to stick a needle in her eye or glue herself to the table than managing embroidery or matting a card, her most famous demand is: “Make me understand, then anyone will understand!” And deep down she does care about her authors – she just cannot have them think she’s a softy in case they don’t stick to their schedules.
Adventure-loving Lindie Metz can start a fire, in the rain, without Blitz. If you can do this, you can make a bunch of creative spirits keep to a strict schedule while ensuring that their books look fabulous, are beautifully printed and are delivered on time. While her portfolio is production, many people know that she’s the “real boss”. Having a technically challenged publisher is no problem when the “real boss” is a jack of all trades who can do just about anything, and knows exactly who to ask on the odd occasion that she can’t.
To survive in publishing when your motto is “Don’t judge a book by its cover!” you have to be good, and Liezl Maree is good! She not only handles book design at Metz Press, but has even been allowed a vote when we chose new paint for the walls – especially once it became known that she shared the publisher’s favourite colour. Our authors love her more than extra Oreo Oreo McFlurries and have even proposed to her on occasion. Her creative touches are also seen in our stand designs at Expos, advertisements and leaflets.
Ralf Metz is German. He likes neat shapes and an ordered environment, which makes him the ideal person to ensure that the financial side of things at Metz Press runs smoothly. Authors and suppliers love his approach to money matters as there are no grey areas, whatsoever.
