Cass Abrahams

Well known for her entertaining and informative presentations on Cape Malay food and culture, Cass Abrahams is highly regarded not only in the Cape Malay community, but throughout the country as a much sought-after caterer, whether for private dinner parties or huge international affairs.

She is a regular guest on lifestyle TV programmes and radio shows, and features as celebrity chef in several books and magazines, both local and international. Quite deservedly described as “a cook with a velvet touch for good food”, she is inspired and propelled by an undying urge to share with everyone who cares to partake of the sensuous tastes of Cape Malay cooking, what she calls, “food from Africa”. Several stints in the restaurant business gave her ample opportunity to experiment with fusion food and giving traditional favourites a contemporary twist. Few people have done more than Cass to ensure that the culinary delights of the Cape Malays find their rightful place among the ethnic foods of the world.

Rudi Adam

Rudi Adam is an acknowledged and widely respected bonsai expert. He first started bonsai in 1970 when he joined the Cape Bonsai Kai. His first tutor was the late Bernard Coetzee, founder of most Cape-based bonsai clubs.

In 1976 Rudi started a place of learning as well as a nursery. At first his main objective was just to teach others the art of bonsai and to find an outlet for the trees created during classes and workshop sessions. But over the years Rudi, together with his wife Pat, developed this into a full-time bonsai nursery offering what any bonsai enthusiast may require: starter plants, semi-developed bonsai, fully fledged mature bonsai and everything that goes with that. But most importantly, the nursery has become a centre of knowledge that develops new talent and offers support and information to bonsai enthusiasts – amateurs and experts alike.

Aside from authoring the book Bonsai in South Africa and various training guides for his classes and workshops, Rudi has been a regular speaker at South African bonsai conventions and bonsai clubs. Over the past decade alone he has accumulated some 90 awards for his trees at various exhibitions. His trees have also been used as material in the books of many other authors (both local and foreign) on bonsai.

Over the years, Rudi has built up a collection of hundreds of trees, many of which can be seen in this book. And if you happen to visit Cape Town, they can be seen at the Olive Grove Bonsai Nursery.
