Retha van der Walt

“As a creative soul with a passion for photography and an addiction to paper I have been scrapbooking in some way or another long before I even knew the hobby existed. When I was finally introduced to it in a formal way I instantly knew I found a way to apply my formal art and design background. I was totally besotted by the hobby and just had to share my passion with everyone. In 2005 I opened a scrapbooking shop, Scraptifity, and one of my dreams came true. After three years of planning another scrapbooking dream was realized when my TV program Fotostories was flighted by pay television’s KykNet and I could share my passion with the rest of South Africa. This book is a natural extension of both dreams and I do hope each and everyone will find inspiration in these layouts.”

Retha is married with three children and lives in Randburg.

Carla Visser

Carla Visser has been a passionate crafter and crafts facilitator for many years. After obtaining a National Diploma in Graphic Design she worked as a stylist for a well-known craft and decor magazine. There she further developed her love for creating crafts in various mediums.

She combined these skills, her passion for photography and her talent for finding treasures in the most unexpected places to create the projects for this book – focusing on recycling, reusing and repurposing even the most unlikely items. She stays inspired by her work as a decor stylist and lives by the quote, “Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”. She lives in Cape Town with her husband and son where she is a regular guest on TV to present her projects, and a popular teacher at craft events.

Jann Visser shadow top
Jann Visser portrait

Jann Visser

Jann Visser was born in Zimbabwe, where she studied art. She started painting in oils and acrylics, selling her works at art exhibitions. After a stint with the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation, she moved to South Africa and joined M-Net television production where she worked for ten years. Jann was introduced to encaustic art in 1996 and soon found herself doing encaustic more and oils less. She fell in love with the fact that it is so ‘instant’ and what started as a hobby became such as passion that she started teaching others this art form.

Writing this book is part of her desire to help more people to discover the beauty of encaustic. She has written numerous articles for craft magazines and regularly gives demonstrations for art societies and groups. She was also invited to appear on Top Billing, a lifestyle TV programme, to demonstrate this rewarding art. Jann lives in Cape Town with her husband, son and daughter.

Tanya Visser shadow top
Tanya Visser portrait

Tanya Visser

Tanya Visser is first and foremost a gardener, but full-time gardening really doesn’t pay well (especially when it’s in your own garden), so she is also the editor of The Gardener and Die Tuinier magazines and presenter of The Gardener television series.

Tanya started gardening at a young age, helping her dad in the veggie patch, and to this day she loves growing her own vegetables for the kitchen. She also nurtures an impressive succulent collection and her collection of grasses is expanding (although she acknowledges that doing all her day jobs leaves her with precious little time to spend in her own garden). Tanya built on the experience she acquired during those very early days in the garden by studying horticulture at what was then Natal Technikon. After qualifying as a horticulturist she began her working career in a garden centre, learning the tricks of the trade and expanding her plant and business knowledge. After a respectable nine years or so in the green industry she moved on to join the world of publishing. She lives in KwaZulu-Natal with her partner, Lyn, and her yorkie.
