Hobby-X – again! entry image

Hobby-X is South Africa's foremost craft and hobby fair, and since we are South Africa's foremost craft publisher of South Africa's foremost craft authors, we simply have to be there – again!

In their marketing material the organizers say “At Hobby-X, the largest showcase for creative craft supplies, ideas and projects in the whole of Africa, you can’t help but be inspired by the variety, quality and originality of the materials and supplies on offer ... With almost 250 exhibition stands to explore you’re in for a spectacular shopping experience – beads and gems, books, magazines, gardening, pewter, glass art, doll making, power tools, woodworking, photography, puzzles, mosaics, scrapbooking, bear making, metal clays, easels, paints, canvasses, model cars, planes and trains, Meccano, slot cars, bungee swings, cooking, card making and so much more.”

Well, for us it means a lot of hard work – physical exertion carting around books and exhibition tools and putting up banners, as well as mental anguish as we try to remember how the cash-register works, having all but forgotten last year’s crash course. But it also means that we get to meet the people who buy our books – that is invaluable. There is the odd grumpy face, but mostly we have the greatest supporters. Crafters from all over South Africa come to browse at our stand and it is delightful to hear them say, “I’ve got that one, oh, and that one, AND that one!” They share ideas and experiences, buy more books, tell us what else they would like to see in print and generally just enjoy the show and what is on offer. And they always tell us that we have a beautiful stand – no wonder we like them so much!

Arriving amidst chaos on the Wednesday before the fair to set up our stand, it is quite difficult to imagine that when the show opens at 10 am the following day, there will be nothing but gorgeous, inviting stands, slick presentations and an air of expectancy as to what is to be found around the next corner. We make new friends, reconnect with old friends we only see at Hobby-X and enjoy spending time with our authors, some of whom travel long distances to help promote their books at the fair, and others who are just always there to assist.

So if you are lucky enough to visit Hobby-X from 1-4 March at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg next month, do visit us at stand C20. In fact, just look for the most beautiful stand – that is where you’ll find us.
